Anna Soubry Biography

Anna Soubry is a British barrister and former journalist who served as an MP for the constituency of Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire from 2010 to 2019. Initially a Conservative politician, she later joined the now-defunct party The Independent Group, or Change UK. With a background in journalism and law, Soubry has been a strong advocate for reducing crime and drug peddling in Nottinghamshire, as well as supporting anti-smoking and anti-drug campaigns. Childhood & Early Life

Anna Mary Soubry was born on December 7, 1956, in Lincoln, England, to David Soubry and Frances Coward. Her father was a garage owner and her mother worked at Lincoln Hospital. She grew up in Dunham-on-Trent and Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire, and attended the Henry Hartland Grammar School. She later graduated with a law degree from the University of Birmingham in 1979. During her time at university, Soubry was involved in student politics and was the only Conservative member of the National Union of Students executive committee. She joined the Social Democrat Party (SDP) in 1981 and remained with the party until it broke in 1988.

Career

After completing her studies, Soubry pursued a career in journalism from 1981 to 1995. She worked with several regional and networked TV programs, including the Granada Television program titled This Morning. In 1995, she was admitted to the bar and became a member of the Criminal Bar Association. Soubry represented the Conservative Party from the Gedling constituency in the 2005 general election, but later got a seat from the Broxtowe constituency in 2006. She was voted to parliament in the 2010 general election and became a Conservative member of the Justice Select Committee.
