Brian Moynihan is an American businessman who currently serves as the CEO and Chairman of Bank of America. He is also the Chairman of The Financial Services Forum and a member of The National Museum of African American History & Culture. With a background in law and banking, Moynihan has held several positions before joining Bank of America. He is recognized for his leadership and commitment to diversity, as Bank of America is listed as one of the Best Workplaces for Diversity by ‘Forbes’ magazine. Moynihan is a father of three and is married to his college classmate, Susan E. Berry.

Career
After earning his Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame Law School, Brian Moynihan joined Edwards & Angell LLP. In 1993, he joined Fleet Boston bank as a deputy general counsel. From 1999 to 2004, he served the bank as the executive vice president, managing its brokerage and wealth management division. He later joined Bank of America (BoA) after it merged with FleetBoston Financial in 2004.
In 2008, Moynihan was elected the CEO of Merrill Lynch after BoA acquired it. The following year, he became President of BoA’s Consumer and Small Business Banking (SBB). Then in 2010, he was promoted to CEO of BoA after Ken Lewis stepped down.
Currently, Moynihan is also the chairman of several other organizations, including the World Economic Forum International Business Council, The Financial Services Forum, and Bank Policy Institute. He is also the CEO of Health & Innovation at Bipartisan Policy Center. He is a member of Federal Reserve Bank’s Federal Advisory Council, National Museum of African American History and Culture, and Brown University Corporation’s Board of Fellows as well.
In the past, Moynihan has also worked for Travelers Aid Society of Rhode Island, Countrywide Bank, and LaSalle Bank Midwest NA. He has served as the chairman for Haitian Project, Inc. as well as the director and president of investment banking at the United States Trust Co., NA. His past roles also include those of the director and president of Global Wealth at FIA Card Services NA, director of The Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston, Inc., vice chairman of The Kennedy Center Corporate Fund and chairman of The Financial Services Roundtable.
Criticism
In 2012, a report titled “Top Corporate Tax Dodgers” was issued in which Moynihan alongside many other CEOs was criticized by Senator Bernie Sanders. According to the report, Moynihan’s BoA did not pay federal income tax in 2010 despite making $4.4 billion in profits. The report also criticized the bank’s use of tax havens.
Family & Personal Life
Brian Moynihan was born on October 19, 1959, in Marietta, Ohio, USA. His father worked as a chemist while his grandfather was a lawyer. He has seven siblings. He attended Brown University and graduated from there in 1981. He then went on to earn a Juris Doctor from the prestigious University of Notre Dame Law School.
Talking about his love life, Moynihan is married to Susan E. Berry. They met as classmates at Brown University. The couple has three children.
