Rise to Stardom
Chloe Bailey’s journey to stardom began when she started learning the cello and violin while being homeschooled in Atlanta. She also taught herself to play the piano by watching YouTube tutorials. Chloe’s love for music inspired her younger sister Halle. Their father, Doug Bailey, recognized their talent and became their manager, allowing them to perform all over Atlanta. It was during this time that they realized their calling to become professional musicians. In an interview, Chloe expressed, “Ever since we were little girls, we’ve always kind of known in our hearts that we would be doing this.”
In 2006, the Grammy-nominated duo created their YouTube channel, ‘Chloe x Halle’, and began posting covers of popular songs. Their first video, “Love Is You”, immediately caught the attention of music lovers. Chloe Bailey then gained further recognition with her solo rendition of “Summertime” in 2009. The sisters’ popularity grew even more after their live performance of the American national anthem, which became their first video to surpass a million views.
Success and Mentorship
The success of ‘Chloe x Halle’ continued to soar as their cover versions of songs like Beyoncé’s “Best Thing I Never Had” and “I Was Here”, Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”, Rihanna’s “Diamonds”, and Lorde’s “Royals” garnered millions of views. However, they were not prepared for the overwhelming response to their cover of Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts” in 2013. The video not only received over 16 million views but also caught the attention of music icon Beyoncé herself. In 2015, Beyoncé signed the sisters to her music label, ‘Parkwood Entertainment’, and became their mentor.
Prior to signing with ‘Parkwood Entertainment’, Chloe and Halle had already released a popular EP titled ‘Uncovered’ in 2013. After joining the label, they debuted their official EP ‘Sugar Symphony’ in 2016, which was a huge success. They were invited to perform at the ‘YouTube Music Foundry’ and the ‘BET Awards’ that same year.
Continued Success and Recognition
The sisters’ careers continued to flourish as they became the opening acts for Beyoncé’s ‘The Formation World Tour’ and Andra Day’s ‘Cheers to the Fall Tour’ in 2016. They released the mixtape ‘The Two of Us’ in 2017, followed by their first studio album ‘The Kids Are Alright’ in 2018, which became their most successful project to date. The album featured popular songs like “Grown” and “Warrior”, with “Grown” already being released as the theme song for the TV series ‘Grown-ish’ in 2017. The sisters received two Grammy nominations for the album in the ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album’ and ‘Best New Artist’ categories in 2019.
In 2019, Chloe and Halle had the opportunity to perform as opening acts for Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s ‘On the Run II Tour’. They also performed “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl LIII in the same year. Additionally, they released the song “Be Yourself” for the movie ‘Little’ in April 2019.
