Career

Douglas Henshall began his acting career in theater while studying in London. He gained recognition for his performances in plays such as ‘Life of Stuff’ and ‘American Buffalo’. After returning to Glasgow, he joined the pro-independence theater group 7:84.

In 1993, Henshall appeared in several television series, including ‘Lipstick on Your Collar’, ‘The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles’, and ‘Screen One’. He also had one of his first successful film roles in ‘Angels and Insects’ in 1995.

In 2002, Henshall returned to the London stage to play Michael Bakunin in Tom Stoppard’s play, ‘The Coast of Utopia’. He also appeared in the television crime thriller film ‘Silent Cry’.

Henshall continued to have a successful career in theater, with notable roles in Harold Pinter’s ‘Betrayal’ and the premiere of the play ’55 Days’ in 2012. He also appeared in television shows such as ‘The Secret of Crickley Hall’ and the adaptation of Ian Rankin’s novel ‘Doors Open’.

In 2013, Henshall began playing the role of Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez in the BBC show ‘Shetland’. He also played the lead role in the Scottish television drama series ‘In Plain Sight’ in 2016.

Henshall’s most recent role was as Max Schumacher in the National Theatre’s production of ‘Network’ in 2017.

He will be returning as Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez in the fourth series of ‘Shetland’ in 2018.

Personal Life

Douglas Henshall was born on November 19, 1965 in Glasgow, Scotland. He attended Barrhead High School and joined the Scottish Youth Theatre. After graduating, he moved to London to train at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.

Henshall married Croatian writer Tena Štivičić in 2010 and they have a daughter together.

Outside of acting, Henshall is passionate about tennis and enjoys playing and watching the sport. He also enjoys cooking, going to the cinema, playing chess, and watching football. He is a supporter of the Scottish football team St. Mirren and the London team Chelsea.
