Career
Floyd Joy Mayweather began his boxing career in 1974, relying heavily on a stiff jab and a strong defensive technique. He was known for his use of the shoulder roll to reduce the impact of punches. In 1977, Mayweather won the US Championship Tournament against Miguel Barreto, posting a record of 28-6-1 (18 KOs). Throughout his career, he participated in 35 fights, winning 28 and knocking out his opponent on 17 occasions. However, Mayweather had to retire from boxing in 1990 due to the respiratory disease sarcoidosis. He then pursued a career in training.
Success as a Trainer
Mayweather found more success as a trainer than as a boxer. He began training his son, Floyd Jr., in boxing tactics from a young age. He also trained Oscar De La Hoya for five years, but their partnership ended in 2007 when De La Hoya refused to pay Mayweather $2 million to manage his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather Sr. also trained notable female fighters such as Laila Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali, and Joan Guzman. Personal Life
Floyd Mayweather Sr. was born on October 19, 1952, in New York, USA. He has two younger brothers who are renowned boxers, Roger Mayweather and Jeff Mayweather. Roger was the WBC super featherweight and super lightweight champion, while Jeff was the IBO super featherweight champion.
Mayweather Sr. taught his son Floyd Jr. to punch when he was a toddler and served as his manager. However, their relationship soured, and Floyd Jr. chose his uncle Roger as his trainer instead. In 1978, Floyd Sr. was shot in the leg by his son’s maternal uncle, who was a small-time drug dealer at the time. This injury had a negative impact on his boxing career. In 2007, Mayweather Sr. discovered that he was the father of boxer Justin Jones. He also suffers from the lung disease sarcoidosis.
