Frances Fisher is an English-born American film, TV, and stage actor, known for her supporting roles in the soap opera ‘The Edge of Night’ and the film ‘Titanic.’ With a passion for acting that began in her high-school years, Fisher moved to New York City to pursue her career and spent 14 years working in the theater circuit. She made her TV debut in 1976 and gained recognition for her role in ‘The Edge of Night,’ where she worked for 5 years. Childhood & Early Life

Frances Fisher was born Frances Louise Fisher on May 11, 1952, in Milford on Sea, Hampshire, England. Her father, William Irving “Bill” Fisher, Sr., was of Russian-Jewish and Hungarian-Jewish descent and worked in an oil refinery. Her mother, Olga Rosine (née Moen), was a homemaker with Norwegian origins. Frances grew up with a younger brother. Due to her father’s job, she spent most of her childhood in different countries such as Turkey, Columbia, France, Canada, and Brazil. When she was in seventh grade, her family settled permanently in Texas, US. Frances graduated from ‘Lutcher Stark High School’ in Orange, Texas. Unfortunately, when she was 15 years old, her mother passed away, leaving her to take care of her younger brother.

Career

Frances developed an interest in acting during her high school years and participated in many high school productions. However, she had to put her dreams on hold to take care of her family. After graduating high school, she worked as a nanny and took on various odd jobs to support herself before moving to New York in 1970. In New York, she attended the ‘Actors Studio’ and studied under her mentor, Lee Strasberg. She then moved to Virginia and worked with the ‘Barter Theatre,’ a repertory theater. Frances dedicated the next decade to making a name for herself in the New York and East Coast theater circles, appearing in several important plays.

In the mid-1970s, Frances auditioned for a supporting role in the ‘ABC’ daytime opera titled ‘The Edge of Night’ and was selected to play the role of ‘Detective Deborah Saxon.’ She appeared in 215 episodes of the show from 1976 to 1980. In 1983, she made her film debut in the comedy film ‘Can She Bake a Cherry Pie?’ and received positive reviews for her performance. She continued to appear in guest roles in various series such as ‘The Equalizer,’ ‘Roseanne,’ and ‘Matlock.’ Frances also had a thriving film career, appearing in films such as ‘Tough Guys Don’t Dance’ and ‘Patty Hearst.’

In 1989, Frances got her first major film breakthrough when she appeared in a supporting role in the Clint Eastwood-starrer comedy-action film ‘Pink Cadillac.’ Although the film did not perform well at the box office, her performance was praised. Following the success of ‘Pink Cadillac,’ Frances was offered several film roles, including her notable role as Rose’s mother in the cult classic film ‘Titanic.’ She also appeared in the film ‘Unforgiven,’ directed by Clint Eastwood, which was a critical and commercial success.

Throughout the early 2000s, Frances had a successful TV career, appearing in guest roles and supporting roles in series such as ‘Titus,’ ‘The X-Files,’ and ‘Glory Days.’ She also appeared in films such as ‘House of Sand and Fog,’ ‘Laws of Attraction,’ ‘Woman in Gold,’ and ‘In the Valley of Elah.’ In addition to her film and TV career, Frances has also appeared in theatrical productions and has been an active member of the ‘Screen Actors Guild.’

Frances married her high school boyfriend, Billy Mack Hamilton, in 1970, but they divorced two years later. She has dated two of the top actors in Hollywood, Clint Eastwood and George Clooney. She dated Clint Eastwood for six years and they have a daughter together named Francesca Eastwood. After her breakup with Clint, Frances started dating George Clooney. In the 2016 US Presidential Elections, she supported Bernie Sanders.
