Andrew Hozier-Byrne, known as Hozier, is an Irish singer and songwriter famous for his hit single ‘Take Me to Church’. With his debut studio album, he quickly gained international recognition in the blues music scene. Hozier’s music style extends beyond blues, incorporating elements of rock and R&B. Career

Born to a local blues musician, Hozier developed a love for music early on. He decided to study music and joined the Trinity College in Dublin and became a part of the Trinity Orchestra as well. However, he later dropped out when he received the opportunity to record demos for the American global music corporation ‘Universal Music’. He joined ‘Anúna’, a choral ensemble in Ireland, and was featured in their 2012 release Illumination singing ‘La Chanson de Mardi Gras’ as a soloist. He toured with the group until 2012 before deciding to follow his music career in a more independent way.

In 2013, Hozier released his first Extended Play titled ‘Take Me to Church’ which became a huge success worldwide. The title song from the EP debuted on the top charts in many nations. It reached the no.1 position in Italy and Belgium and peaked at no. 2 in the US, the UK, Canada, and Germany, among others. The single earned the platinum certificate from various organizations across different countries, including the RIAA, RMNZ, BVMI, and MC. The title track also went viral on the internet and has over 210 million views on YouTube as of today. He won a BBC Music Award, two Billboard Music Awards, and a Teen Choice Award for the song. He also won a Grammy nomination for it in 2015.

Hozier released his second EP, titled ‘From Eden,’ in March 2014. The EP was not as successful as the previous one; however, it did earn its fair share of acclaim. The title song from the EP peaked at no. 2 in Ireland and reached no. 69 in the UK. In the same year, Hozier released his self-titled debut studio album. It featured three singles, ‘Take Me to Church’, ‘Work Song’, and ‘From Eden’, from his two previous EP’s. The album topped the Ireland music chart and peaked at the second place in Canada and the US. The album received platinum certification in Ireland, Canada, Australia, the UK, the US, and New Zealand. Hozier won a European Border Breakers Award in 2015 for his debut studio album.

Apart from his albums and EPs, Hozier has also appeared in several popular television shows like ‘Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2014’, ‘Saturday Night Live’, ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’, and ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’. He has performed at the Grammy Awards and at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards as well.

Personal Life

Hozier was born in Bray, County Wicklow, on 17 March 1990, to a local blues musician. He attended the Delgany National School and later enrolled in St. Gerard’s School. He also went to Trinity College, Dublin, to study music; however, he dropped out after getting the chance to record demos for a reputed company.
