Rise to Stardom

Jason Ethier began his YouTube journey by creating the channels ‘JayStation’ and ‘JayVision’ on June 1, 2015. While he hardly uploaded videos on the latter, the former one soon became notoriously popular for his unconventional videos. For instance, he started out by sharing in a ‘Story Time’ video how he got arrested for sneaking into a mall. While he also uploaded a few prank videos, what got the attention of netziens, most were his ’24 Hour Overnight Challenge’ videos in which he attempted to spend the night at places like a Church, a homeless shelter, a school, and so on. Within a year, he was not only entering places like restaurants, auto shops, malls and dumpsters, he even shared videos of him sneaking into a stranger’s house, luxury hotels, and event the Trump Tower. He soon started to get warnings from the police, and eventually had to discontinue his original channel and port the videos to the new one, ‘ImJayStation’. While he had about 360k subscribers to his old channel at the time, the new one got over 100k within a day. He has been a bit more cautious since then, but he still posts ‘overnight challenges’, as well as ‘3 A.M. challenges’, box forts and vlogs.

Controversies & Scandals

Jason Ethier has courted controversy since he began posting his overnight challenge videos on YouTube. In November 2016, he faced police charges after he posted a video of him sneaking into an empty house. While he later claimed that the video was staged, he was still charged with five counts of trespassing for entering other locations. YouTube subsequently decided to demonetize his entire channel, instead of the five videos that were involved, prompting him to create a new channel and re-upload the rest of the videos.

In February 2018, it was revealed on a Reddit post that he had stolen a ‘Fortnight’ gameplay video from a less popular YouTuber for one of his own videos without crediting the original creator. He again made news headlines in late March 2018 after he was arrested outside the ticket area at Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Florida. Ethier, who was visiting the state with fellow YouTuber, ‘TheFAM’, was recording content for future haunted vlogs when they entered Disney World to fulfill his lifelong dream. He put his $3000 camera inside his bag and handed it over to the authorities at a security table for inspection and passed through the metal detector himself. However, when he looked for the bag five seconds later, the bag and the camera were missing. When he asked them to look into security footage, he was reportedly told to call lost and found to retrieve them. They also stopped ‘TheFAM’, who had started recording the incident, and had him delete the video. After Ethier began livestreaming the incident to his fans, he was asked to leave, following which he became aggressive and verbally abusive. The officials subsequently called the police who arrested him and charged him with trespassing and resisting arrest without violence, even though video evidence showed he was leaving while blaming them. He was then taken into custody at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and later released on a $1,200 bond. Ethier, who had retrieved parts of his stream from his fans and also the deleted footage from TheFAM’s camera, claimed that “if I didn’t have any video evidence, I would be screwed.” In their arrest report, the Orange County police claimed that he had threatened to sue the officer.
