Childhood & Early Life
K Camp, born Kristopher Campbell on April 27, 1990, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. His family settled in Atlanta during a time when the rap music scene was thriving, which sparked his interest in music from a young age. In high school, he joined a music group called ‘HBC’ but eventually left because he felt they lacked a genuine passion for music. He then started making music with a schoolmate named Dave and began performing at open mic contests, but they struggled to gain recognition. Despite his mother’s urging to attend college, Camp dropped out after two months and started working at a local movie theater to pay his bills. He continued to pursue music and eventually found a breakthrough with his song ‘Up All Night.’
Career
‘Up All Night’ brought Camp some local fame in the Georgia nightclub scene. He worked tirelessly to promote the album and caught the attention of a leading industry professional who became his manager. However, the song didn’t gain much traction outside of Georgia due to his manager’s lack of knowledge about the professional music scene. Camp then fired his manager and hired his mother as his working manager, allowing him to work more independently. He and his mother dedicated themselves to music, setting up a studio in their house.
In 2012, Camp gained minor celebrity status after writing and singing the hook for Mykko Montana’s song ‘Do It.’ However, the song’s success primarily benefited Mykko. Camp continued to collaborate with other artists and released several songs with producer Big Fruit, but he still struggled to achieve widespread success. He eventually teamed up with his friend Kwony Cash, and together they created the hit song ‘Money Baby,’ which gained popularity in Georgia and caught the attention of music producers and DJs. The song became a success on YouTube, and Camp started to gain a loyal local fan base.
After years of hard work, Camp secured a meeting with Interscope Records in 2014 and signed a deal with them. He released his debut EP, ‘In Due Time,’ on a larger scale and achieved significant success with the song ‘Cut Her Off,’ featuring 2 Chainz. The song reached the 49th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and received a nomination for the Best Club Banger award at the 2014 BET Hip-Hop Awards. Camp’s career continued to flourish with the release of his debut studio album, ‘Only Way Is Up,’ in 2015, which featured collaborations with industry veterans such as Snoop Dogg, Jeremih, and T.I.
Camp went on to release several mixtapes and albums, including ‘RARE Sound’ (2018), ‘This For You’ (2018), ‘Wayy 2 Kritical’ (2019), ‘Kiss Five’ (2020), ‘Rare Family’ (2020), ‘Float’ (2021), and ‘Vibe Forever’ (2022). His music consistently garnered attention and success, with ‘Kiss Five’ peaking at number 29 on the US Billboard 200.
