Machine Gun Kelly, born as Colson Baker, is an American rapper known for his unique style and rapid fire lyrical flow. Starting his career in high school, MGK gained a local following through the release of mixtapes before achieving breakthrough success with the 2006 Stamp of Approval mixtape. This led to a deal with Bad Boy and Interscope Records, and the release of his debut album Lace Up in 2012. Childhood & Early Life

Colson Baker, better known by his nickname Machine Gun Kelly (MGK), was born on April 22, 1990, in Houston, USA to missionary parents. His family moved all around the world, and Kelly spent his early childhood in places such as Egypt, Germany, and throughout the United States. Tragedy struck him early on as his mother left home, and his father suffered from depression and unemployment. To find solace, he started listening to rap music. He studied at Hamilton Middle School and later at Denver’s Thomas Jefferson High School. While in high school, he experimented with drugs and recorded his first amateur demo tape, Stamp of Approval. Later, he enrolled at Shaker Heights High School, where his music career began. He gained his stage name Machine Gun Kelly (MGK) by his fans due to his rapid-fire delivery, a name that stuck with him for life.


In 2006, Machine Gun Kelly released the mixtape Stamp of Approval, which built a reputation for him as a performer and artist. He began performing at local Cleveland venues. His early break came with a victory at Apollo Theatre in 2009, the first-ever by a rapper. He gained national spotlight when he was featured on MTV2’s Sucker Free Freestyle, where he freestyled numerous verses from his single “Chip off the Block.” He released his second mixtape, 100 Words and Running, in February 2010, where he derived his catchphrase, Lace Up. He worked at Chipotle to support himself during this time. In May 2010, he made his national debut with the single “Alice in Wonderland,” which received positive reception and earned him the Best Midwest Artist award at the 2010 Underground Music Awards. He released his second mixtape, Lace Up, in November 2010, featuring the hometown anthem “Cleveland.” He signed a recording contract with Bad Boy Records and released the music video for “Wild Boy” featuring Waka Flocka Flame. He released his first EP, Half Naked & Famous, in 2012, which debuted at 46 on the Billboard 200. In October 2012, his debut album Lace Up was released, debuting at number 4 on the US Billboard 200. He has since released several more albums, including Bloom (2017), Hotel Diablo (2019), and Tickets to My Downfall (2020).

Acting Career

In addition to his music career, MGK has also dabbled in acting. He made his film debut in 2014 in the film Beyond the Lights and starred in the Showtime comedy-drama series Roadies in 2016. He has also appeared in films such as Viral, Punk’s Dead: SLC Punk 2, Nerve, Bird Box, and The Dirt.

MGK has also struggled with drug addiction and openly spoke about his addiction and period of homelessness in 2010. He attended a rehabilitation center to overcome his addiction and has been sober since then.
