Career

In the fall of 2002, Marco Perego made the decision to leave behind his soccer dreams and pursue a career as an artist in New York City. Initially, he supported himself by taking on odd jobs such as being a busboy, waiter, and soccer teacher. He lived in Spanish Harlem and later at 104th Street.

Perego’s career as an artist began to take shape when he sold his first painting to Gilda Moratti, a member of the famous Moratti family in New York. She visited him to see his art, and he asked for her honest opinion. Fortunately, she liked his work and purchased one of his paintings. As the years went by, Perego’s career grew, and his paintings started selling for prices ranging from $15,000 to $30,000 per piece.

According to art critic Glenn O’Brien, Perego’s work is rooted in the ancient Mediterranean tradition and he remains loyal to his Hellenistic roots. In 2007, he gained recognition when his sculpture titled ‘The Only Good Rockstar Is a Dead Rockstar’ was featured on the cover of ‘The Guardian’. Interestingly, this sculpture seemed to foreshadow the death of British singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse.

Perego’s art has been exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Museo Tuscolano in Rome, Art Basel Miami, and Zurich’s Galerie Gmurzynska. In addition to his paintings, he also released a 25-minute short film called ‘Burn to Shine’ in 2015, which consisted of over 2,500 drawings.

Personal Life

Marco Perego was born on March 1, 1979, in Salò, Italy, into a blue-collar family. His father worked as a waiter, while his mother was a homemaker. As a child, Perego had a passion for art, but his main focus was on soccer. He played the sport throughout his adolescence and even joined Venice’s professional soccer team at the age of 17. Unfortunately, his soccer career was cut short when he suffered a leg injury at the age of 21.

After his injury, Perego initially went to Brazil to recover and potentially return to soccer. However, he eventually decided to give up on his soccer dreams and moved to New York City to pursue his passion for art.

In March 2013, Perego began dating American actress and dancer Zoe Saldana. They got married in June of the same year in a secret ceremony in London. After their marriage, both Perego and Saldana decided to go against certain cultural norms. Perego took on the last name Perego-Saldana, while Saldana became Saldana-Perego. The couple has three sons together. Twins Bowie Ezio Perego-Saldana and Cy Aridio Perego-Saldana were born in November 2014, and their younger brother Zen Perego-Saldana was born in February 2017. Perego and Saldana are raising their children to be bilingual, as they want them to be fluent in both Spanish and English.
