Mike Huckabee is a prominent American politician, Baptist minister, and political commentator. Serving as the 44th governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007, he has made significant contributions to the political landscape. Huckabee has also been a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in both 2008 and 2016. Childhood & Early Life

Michael Dale Huckabee was born on August 24, 1955, in Hope, Arkansas, United States, to Dorsey Wiles Huckabee and Mae Huckabee. He grew up with a sister named Pat Harris. Huckabee got his first job at 14 and worked at a local radio station. He was the first male member of his family to finish high school and was involved in student council during his time at Hope High School. He was elected governor of Arkansas by his chapter of the American Legion-sponsored Boys State program in 1972 and entered the ministry at Garrett Memorial Baptist Church in Hope the same year. He completed his bachelor’s degree in religion from Ouachita Baptist University in 1978 and went to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, but dropped out early to work in Christian broadcasting.

Pastoral Career

After working for televangelist James Robison, Huckabee served as a pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Beech Street First Baptist Church in Texarkana. He started 24-hour television stations in both cities and encouraged the all-white Immanuel Baptist Church to accept black members. He also served as the president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention and received honorary doctorates from John Brown University and Ouachita Baptist University.

Political Career

In 1992, Huckabee ran for the United States Senate election in Arkansas but lost. He then ran for lieutenant governor in a special election in 1993 and won. After the resignation of the governor, Huckabee became the state’s third elected Republican governor since Reconstruction. He served two full terms as governor and received praise for his response to Hurricane Katrina. During his time as governor, he commuted and accepted recommendations for pardon for many prisoners, but one case received national attention after the parolee committed multiple crimes, including murder.

Huckabee announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential campaign but withdrew from the race. He was considered as a vice presidential running mate for John McCain but was not chosen. He did not run for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012.

Media Career

Huckabee became a political commentator for Fox News in 2008 and hosted the weekend show “Huckabee” until 2015. He also hosted a radio program called “The Huckabee Report” and a daily talk show on Cumulus Media Networks. He currently hosts the relaunched “Huckabee” show on the Trinity Broadcasting Network.

Huckabee married Janet McCain in 1974, and they have three children. His daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, served as White House press secretary and is currently the governor-elect of Arkansas. Huckabee struggled with obesity and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2003. He underwent a lifestyle change and lost over 110 pounds. He has written several books and is an avid musician, playing the electric bass guitar in his band, Capitol Offense.
