Childhood & Early Life

Robert Coppola Schwartzman was born on December 24, 1982, in Los Angeles, California, to Jack Schwartzman and Talia Shire. His mother was an actor who had appeared as ‘Connie Corleone’ in ‘The Godfather’ films. She was the sister of Francis Ford Coppola, the famous director. Robert’s father, Jack, was also a renowned producer. Robert is Jewish from his father’s side and a Catholic Italian from his mother’s side.

Robert grew up in a family that was heavily involved with the American film industry. His family members include stalwarts such as Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola, and Roman Coppola. His older brother, Jason, is the lead singer of the band ‘Coconut Records.’

One can imagine how easy it would have been for Robert to be influenced by the entertainment industry. However, initially, he did not want to become an actor or a musician. He visited film sets as a kid and became influenced with the process of filmmaking. He aspired to become a film director someday.

He attended ‘Windward School’ in Los Angeles. While in school, he discovered a fascination for making music. He founded a pop band named ‘Rooney’ during his high-school years.

In the early 2000s, he enrolled at the ‘Eugene Lang College’ and wrote songs and made music from his hostel room. During holidays, he would return to Los Angeles and continue working with ‘Rooney.’ As he began working on his debut album, he realized that music was his true calling. Soon, he began making music full-time in Los Angeles, after quitting college.

Robert made his acting debut with his cousin Sofia Coppola’s short film ‘Lick the Star.’ He played a supporting role in the film. The film was a 16 mm black-and-white movie. The following year, Sofia Coppola made her feature-film debut with the tragedy film ‘The Virgin Suicides.’ Robert earned the supporting role of ‘Paul Baldino’ in the film. The film received huge critical acclaim and was a commercial success, too.

In 2001, Robert appeared in the supporting role of ‘Michael’ in the coming-of-age teen comedy ‘The Princess Diaries.’ Although the film received mixed reviews upon its release, it was a massive box-office success.

Although he had been getting steady roles in films, his true interest lay in music. His music group, ‘Rooney,’ had earned a deal with ‘Geffen’/‘Interscope Records’ by the early 2000s and had started working on their self-titled debut album.

The alternative rock album ‘Rooney’ was released on May 27, 2003, to favorable critical reviews. Most of the songs from the album were written by Robert when he was in college. A single from the album, ‘Blueside,’ was featured in the Robert-starrer film ‘The Princess Diaries.’

In 2004, he and his fellow musicians of ‘Rooney’ appeared in an episode of the series ‘The O.C.,’ titled ‘The Third Wheel.’ He then made a small appearance as a gas station kid in the “found footage”-style film ‘Look.’

As he worked in few films around this time, he was seen spending more time in the recording studios, working on his second album, ‘Calling the World.’ The album was released in 2007. The album took 3 years to come to its final shape, and almost 50 songs were recorded for it. The album was eventually released with 12 songs.

The album peaked at the 42nd spot on the ‘Billboard 200’ chart and sold about 15,000 copies in its first week.

The band released their third studio album, ‘Eureka,’ in June 2010. By then, ‘Rooney’ had established their record label, ‘California Dreamin’.’ ‘Eureka’ was the band’s first album under their label. The album had 12 songs, and although it received above-average reviews, the response to its release was lukewarm.

After a hiatus of 6 years, ‘Rooney’ released their fourth and last album to date, ‘Washed Away,’ under the label ‘Beachwood Park.’

Robert’s career in music and acting did not quite take off as expected. He turned to his childhood dream of film direction in 2016, with the film ‘Dreamland.’ The film received good reviews and was premiered at the ‘Tribeca Film Festival.’

In 2018, Robert directed the film ‘The Unicorn,’ which had its world premiere at the ‘South by Southwest’ film festival and received immense critical acclaim.

In the more recent years, he has appeared as an actor in a few short films, such as ‘Casino Moon’ and ‘Modern/Love.’ He also appeared in supporting roles in films such as ‘It Happened in L.A.’ and ‘Lost Transmissions.’ He has produced and written films such as ‘The Unicorn’ and ‘Dreamland.’
