Childhood & Early Life
Rohit Gurunath Sharma was born on April 30, 1987 in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra, to Gurunath Sharma and Purnima Sharma. He grew up with his grandparents and uncles in the western Mumbai suburb of Borivli and visited his parents every weekend. At the age of eight, he became interested in cricket and attended a coaching camp led by Dinesh Lad. Lad recognized his potential and arranged for a sports scholarship for him at Swami Vivekanand International School. Sharma scored a century on his debut as an opener during the Harris and Giles Shield school cricket tournaments.
Domestic Career
Sharma made his domestic cricket debut for West Zone in 2005 and gained attention for his unbeaten 142 against North Zone. He was selected for the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy and was also in the list of 30 probable for the Champions Trophy. He made his First-class debut for India A in 2006 and his Ranji debut for Mumbai in the 2006-07 season, during which he scored a double-century against Gujarat.
International Career
Sharma made his ODI debut in 2007 and earned the ‘Man of the Match’ award for his unbeaten 50 against South Africa in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20. He was selected for the 2007-08 Commonwealth Bank Series in Australia and scored two half-centuries. However, a series of bad performances cost him his place in the team. He made his test debut in 2013 and scored two back-to-back hundreds. In 2014, he scored 264 against Sri Lanka, breaking several ODI records.
IPL Career
Sharma was selected by the Deccan Chargers franchise in the 2008 IPL and won the Orange Cap as the leading run-scorer. He was bought by the Mumbai Indians in 2011 and led the team to three IPL trophies.
Captaincy
Sharma was named the captain of the Mumbai Ranji team for the 2013-14 season and captained the Indian team in the absence of Virat Kohli in 2017. He has received numerous awards and achievements, including the ‘Arjuna Award’ in 2015 and scoring three ODI double centuries.
