Childhood & Early Life

Roman Abramovich was born on 24th October 1966 at Saratov, Russia in a lower middle-class family. He lost his parents soon after he was born and was orphaned at the age of 2. His uncle took him with him to Ukhta, where Roman saw difficult times from a very early age. Despite the challenges, he learned the value of money and started his first venture as a student, a plastic toy making company.

Career

Roman’s business sense allowed him to earn a good amount of profit from his early ventures. He continued working towards his goal of becoming rich. In the late 80s, Russia was undergoing major business and tax reforms, which presented opportunities for Roman. With the money he had saved, he set up a plastic toy making company and started selling toys from his small apartment. After a few years, he realized it was time to move on to bigger things.

During 1992-1995, Roman invested in the right industries and focused on establishing resale companies. He earned good profits and then shifted his focus to oil companies. In 1995, he partnered with Boris Berezovsky to purchase controlling shares in the oil company ‘Sibneft’ for USD 100 million. The share prices jumped, making millions in profit for Roman and his partner. Boris later sold his shares to Roman, further growing his empire.

Roman then turned his attention to the Russian Aluminium industry, which was highly lucrative at the time. He emerged as the sole winner in the Russian ‘Aluminium War’ and successfully took over the industry. In 2003, he bought most of the companies that owned the Chelsea football club, which was considered one of the weakest teams. Under his ownership, the club has performed well.

In 2015, Roman invested in an Israeli start-up music app called Music Messenger, partnering with musicians such as Nicki Minaj and David Guetta.

Political Career

Roman Abramovich served as the governor of Chukotka from 2000 to 2008. During his tenure, he spent close to a billion dollars on the welfare of the area. He resigned from the post in 2008, but the charitable activities he started in his name continued.

Controversies

Some of these rumors stem from his arrest in the early 90s for allegedly stealing government property.
