Sanni Biography

Sanni Mari Elina Kurkisuo, better known as Sanni, is a Finnish singer, songwriter, and actor. From a young age, Sanni showed her talent for storytelling, winning the prestigious Napero-Finlandia competition at just eight years old. With a musical upbringing and her mother’s influence, Sanni developed a passion for music at the age of five. At twenty, she was signed by Warner Music Finland and released her debut album ‘Sotke Mut’, which achieved platinum certification. Sanni has since released several successful singles, including ‘Prinsessoja ja astronautteja’, ‘2080-luvulla’, and ‘Että mitähän vittua’. Alongside her music career, Sanni has also made appearances in films, notably in the 2012 Finnish film ‘Miss Farkku-Suomi’.

Career

Sanni’s career in music was heavily influenced by her mother, who was also a singer associated with a Finnish music band. She began learning to play musical instruments, such as the guitar, at a young age. On September 20, 2013, Warner music Finland launched Sanni and released her debut studio album ‘Sotke mut’ which translates to ‘Mess Me Up’ in English. The album consisted of twelve singles, including ‘Prinsessoja ja astronautteja’ and ‘Jos mä oon oikee’, and was produced under the guidance of Hank Solo. Both singles reached as high as number three on the Official Finnish Charts. The album was certified platinum by Musiikkituottajat, selling over 20,000 copies.

Her second studio album ‘Lelu’, meaning ‘Toy’ in English, was released on April 24, 2015, again by Warner Music Finland. Like her previous album, it was produced under the guidance of Hank Solo. The album featured ten singles, all written by Sanni herself. The track ‘2080-luvulla’ reached number one on the Finnish airplay and downloads charts and held the record for the most number of weeks at the top (eleven weeks).

A year later, in 2016, Sanni released her third studio album simply titled ‘Sanni’. The album included singles like ‘Kelpaat kelle vaan’, ‘Tahdon rakastella sinua’, and ‘Timantit on ikuisia’, which peaked at number 2, 4, and 5 respectively on the Finnish top charts.

Acting Career

In addition to her music, Sanni also ventured into acting. She appeared in a Finnish movie called ‘Miss Farkku-Suomi’ alongside Mikko Neuvonen and Elias Gould. The film, directed by Matti Kinnunen, is based on the novel of the same title by Kauko Röyhkä. Sanni played one of the lead characters in the film and received praise for her work.

Personal Life

Sanni was born on May 21, 1993, in Lohja, Finland. Her mother, Tuula Kurkisuo, is a former Finnish singer. Sanni attended senior high school in Sibelius-lukio and graduated in 2012. In 2016, she won the Emma Award for Best Song (‘2080-luvulla’) and the Emma Award for Best Female Soloist.
