Early Professional Career
Sebastian Lletget’s early professional career began when he was chosen by Sporting Santa Clara youth soccer club to represent its team in the US under-17 residency program. He then caught the eye of West Ham United FC International Academy’s scouts, which led to his next opportunity to further his career.
Career as a Club Footballer
In 2009, Lletget made the move to England and signed his debut professional deal with West Ham United FC in September of the following year. However, he did not play a single match in the English Premier League (EPL) for the next five seasons. He mostly participated in warm-up games and pre-season friendly fixtures. In the 2012-13 season, he was selected as a substitute in four games but never took the field. His chances of making appearances were further dampened by his suffering from mononucleosis.
At the end of the 2012-13 Premier League season, Sebastian extended his contract with West Ham for two subsequent seasons. However, the only time he played was in a FA Cup fixture against Nottingham Forest on January 5, 2014, which West Ham lost (0-5).
After returning to the US in 2015, Lletget was contracted by Los Angeles Galaxy on May 8 of that year. He made his first appearance against Orlando City SC on May 17, coming on as a substitute. LA Galaxy lost the game 4-0. He also represented LA Galaxy II, making his debut against Colorado Springs on May 30, 2015, and winning the match 2-1. He made his debut for the A-team on June 13, scoring his first goal for LA Galaxy. He continued to score goals in subsequent matches, including in the US Open Cup fixtures.
In the 2015 season, Lletget was the second-highest goal scorer for LA Galaxy, scoring a total of seven goals and setting up two. He made 20 appearances and was twice selected for the ‘MLS Team of the Week’. In the 2016 MLS season, he played over 2,000 minutes but only scored one goal. However, he helped set up eight goals and was eligible for the MLS Team of the Week once.
International Career
Sebastian Lletget has represented the US national squad in FIFA U-17 and U-20 World Cup matches, as well as in Olympic Soccer Tournament fixtures. He was selected by Bruce Arena, the coach of the USMNT, to play in qualifying matches for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Lletget made his debut for USMNT in a game against Serbia on January 29, 2017, and scored his first goal for the national squad against Honduras on March 24. Unfortunately, he had to leave the field in the game against Honduras due to a foot injury and will be sidelined for several months.
