Hurwitz and Penfield have been working together since the 1980s. Their 2018 project ‘Passing’ was inspired by the deaths of their loved ones, including Hurwitz’s parents who died within two years of each other. They spent five years developing the project, and it premiered on April 28 at Randolph’s Chandler Center for the Arts.

Hurwitz has appeared in two documentaries in her career. In 2012, she and her husband were featured in ‘The Fruit Hunters’, a documentary directed by Yung Chang that explores the relationship between man and food. Little is known about Hurwitz’s family and early childhood, but she is of Norwegian descent and was born in the United States. Her father, an art educator and painter, passed away in her arms in a Los Angeles art gallery in 2012 at the age of 91. She has also lost her mother.

Hurwitz and actor Bill Pullman got married on January 3, 1987, after dating for a considerable period. They have three children together. Their first child, Maesa, was born in 1988, followed by their son Jack in 1989, and their youngest child Lewis in 1993.
