Childhood & Early Life

Volkan Oezdemir was born on September 19, 1989, in Switzerland. During his training at the ‘Golden Glory’ gym in the Netherlands, he became friends with Dutch mixed martial artist Alistair Overeem. Oezdemir started participating in amateur and professional kickboxing tournaments and also trained in Brazilian jiu-jitsu before transitioning to mixed martial arts.

Career

Oezdemir began his professional mixed martial arts career in 2010 with a record of 9-0. He signed a contract with ‘The Bellator MMA’ and made his promotional debut at ‘Bellator 105’ in October 2013, winning via a first-round technical knockout. He later joined the ‘UFC’ in 2017 and made his promotional debut at ‘UFC Fight Night 104,’ defeating Ovince St. Preux via a split decision.

He continued his winning streak by defeating Misha Cirkunov and Jimi Manuwa, both via knockout, at ‘UFC Fight Night 109’ and ‘UFC 214’ respectively. However, he suffered a loss to Daniel Cormier at ‘UFC 220’ and faced visa-related issues that prevented him from participating in ‘UFC Fight Night 129.’

Oezdemir faced Maurício Rua at ‘UFC Fight Night 134’ and was scheduled to fight Alexander Gustafsson at ‘UFC 227,’ but he was removed from the bout due to a nose injury. He suffered losses to Anthony Smith and Dominick Reyes at ‘UFC Fight Night 138’ and ‘UFC on ESPN+ 5’ respectively.

He bounced back with a victory against Ilir Latifi at ‘UFC on ESPN 5’ and defeated Aleksandar Rakić at ‘UFC on ESPN+ 23’ via a split decision. Oezdemir also has a record of 5-0 in professional kickboxing.

Controversy

On November 19, 2017, Oezdemir was charged with aggravated battery and arrested in Fort Lauderdale. He was later released on bail. The charges were dropped on July 9, 2018.

Family & Personal Life

Oezdemir’s father is Turkish and of Kurdish ethnicity, while his mother is of Swiss descent. He is married but has not disclosed the identity of his wife to the media. He speaks French.
