Childhood & Early Life
Yung, whose real name is Matthew Hauri, was born on March 19, 1996, in Rochester, Minnesota. He grew up in Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he graduated with a degree in marketing in December 2017. Yung started creating music on SoundCloud at a young age. He tragically lost his father when he was 16 years old and does not have any siblings. During his college days, he developed a love for rapping and frequently performed at parties and social gatherings. Inspired by the success of rappers like Lil Yachty and Ugly God, Yung decided to pursue a career in rapping seriously.
Career
Yung initially worked as a startup accelerator but eventually quit his job to focus entirely on his music career. He began by self-recording his songs and initially hesitated to promote himself. However, as time went on, he embraced self-promotion and started uploading his music on SoundCloud in 2016. To his surprise, his compositions gained a large following and he quickly amassed over 500 thousand subscribers on his YouTube channel. His first song, “Karen,” received positive feedback, boosting his confidence and leading him to release more music for his audience. Within a year, he became an internet music sensation.
Yung released his first EP, “Mr. Clean,” on September 8, 2016, which became a major hit and went viral on social media. He continued to release music throughout the year, including his debut mixtape, “Thanksgiving’s Eve,” on December 23, 2016. His EP “Snow Cougar,” released on May 4, 2018, under Republic Records, marked his first EP that was not self-released.
